Local SEO

Local SEO is the practice of optimizing a business's online presence to rank for searches tied to a specific city, neighborhood, or service area, so nearby customers can find you when they need what you sell.

What local SEO actually means

Local SEO is a subset of search engine optimization that focuses on ranking for queries with local intent. These are searches like plumber near me, dentist Detroit, or 24 hour locksmith Royal Oak. Google treats these searches differently from generic informational queries because the user is almost always trying to find a business they can call, visit, or book today.

Instead of ranking ten blue links from across the web, Google returns a map pack of three local businesses, a set of local service ads, and only then the standard organic results. To compete in the map pack, a business has to look credible to Google's local algorithm. Local SEO is the work of making that happen.

Ranking signals Google uses for local results

Google has been transparent that three buckets of signals drive local rankings: relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is how well your business category and content match the searcher's intent. Distance is the physical gap between the searcher and your business. Prominence is how well known and trusted your business appears across the web.

In practice that translates into a Google Business Profile filled out accurately, consistent name, address, and phone number across directories, a steady stream of authentic reviews, location-specific landing pages on your site, and links from locally relevant sources like chambers of commerce, news outlets, and industry associations.

How local SEO differs from traditional SEO

Traditional SEO is mostly about ranking a single page for a query anywhere in the world. Local SEO is about ranking your business for the right query within a specific geographic radius. The two disciplines share core fundamentals like page speed, content quality, and a clean technical foundation, but local SEO layers on map pack optimization, citation building, and review management.

A national brand with a single shopping site cares about traditional SEO. A roofer, a law firm, a restaurant, or a medical practice with a physical service area cares about local SEO first and traditional SEO second.

Where local SEO results actually show up

Local SEO targets four real estate slots in the search results: the Google Business Profile knowledge panel, the local map pack of three businesses, the standard organic results when the query is location-aware, and Google Maps itself. Strong local SEO usually wins all four.
