What AI Overviews are
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries Google places at the top of the results page for a growing share of queries. Instead of asking you to click into a page to find an answer, Google reads several pages, writes a few paragraphs that combine them, and links out to the sources it drew from.
They grew out of the Search Generative Experience that Google tested in 2023 and 2024, and they are now a permanent fixture for informational, how-to, and comparison searches. They show up most often when a question has a clear factual answer that can be assembled from a handful of credible pages.
Why AI Overviews matter for your traffic
An AI Overview can answer a searcher's question without sending a single click to any website, which compresses the click-through rate on the blue links below it. For purely informational queries that have no commercial follow-through, this is a real loss of traffic, and the data since 2024 shows it.
The upside is that an Overview cites its sources, and a citation puts your brand in front of the searcher at the exact moment they are forming an opinion. The pages that get cited tend to be the ones that already rank well and answer the question cleanly. Ranking in the classic results and earning a citation now go together.
How to earn a citation in an AI Overview
Write pages that answer a specific question directly in the first paragraph, then support that answer with detail. Google's model pulls from passages that read as confident, self-contained answers, so a clear definition or a direct yes or no near the top helps. Structured content like ordered steps, short comparison tables, and question-and-answer sections gives the model clean material to quote.
Topical authority matters more than ever. Sites that cover a subject thoroughly, with internal linking that connects related pages, are cited more often than thin pages that touch a topic once. The same fundamentals that win a featured snippet tend to win an AI Overview citation.
What to do about it
Stop chasing pure-informational keywords that an Overview will fully satisfy, and shift effort toward queries with commercial intent where the searcher still needs to click to act. Track which of your queries now show an Overview, watch your click-through rate on them, and double down on the content that still earns the click.
