How to Choose a Web Design Agency: 8 Questions You Need to Ask

Not all agencies are created equal. Here is exactly how to vet potential partners so you do not end up stuck with a bad website and a worse experience.

Choosing the wrong web design agency is expensive | not just in dollars, but in time, stress, and missed business. The good news: most bad agency relationships are avoidable with the right questions upfront. Here are the eight questions that separate serious agencies from ones you should avoid.

1. Can I see recent examples of similar work?

Any agency worth hiring should have a portfolio. Ask specifically for examples from your industry or of sites with similar goals to yours. If an agency cannot show you at least 3 to 5 polished, live examples, walk away.

2. Who exactly will be building my site?

Some agencies present senior talent in the sales process and then hand your project to junior staff or offshore contractors. Ask directly: who is the designer, who is the developer, and will I have direct access to them? The people you are paying should be the people doing the work.

3. Do I own everything when the project is done?

You should own your domain, your hosting account, your design files, and your code | outright, with no strings attached. Some agencies retain ownership of assets to create dependency. Make sure the contract explicitly transfers all intellectual property to you.

4. What does the process look like from start to finish?

Agencies with a defined process deliver better, more predictable results. Look for clear milestones, review checkpoints, and a timeline with specific deliverable dates. Vague answers like 'we will figure it out as we go' are a red flag.

5. What SEO work is included in the base price?

A well-built website should come with on-page SEO foundations included, not as an expensive add-on. Ask specifically: will my pages have optimized title tags, meta descriptions, heading structure, schema markup, and a sitemap? If those are extras, factor that into your true cost comparison.

6. What happens after launch?

Launch is not the end | it is the beginning. Ask what ongoing support looks like and what it costs. How quickly do they respond to issues? Do they offer hosting and maintenance? How are CMS updates handled? A good agency wants a long-term relationship, not a one-time transaction.

7. Can I talk to a current or past client?

References matter. A confident agency will connect you with current clients without hesitation. If you get stonewalled on this request, treat it as a serious warning sign.

8. How do you measure success?

A great agency is not just designing a website | they are helping you grow your business. Ask what success looks like, how they will measure it, and how they plan to help you get there. If the answer is only 'it will look great,' you need a different agency.
